This small scraper plane is based on the Stanley #212, which has become a rare collector’s item and often fetches high prices. Its compact size allows for comfortable use with either one or two hands.
The plane features a groove on the sole, known as the "Rodmaker’s Groove." This groove was specifically designed for planing materials that are held in a form or jig, such as the components of a fishing rod.
The scraper blade is set at a 60° angle, sharpened at 45°, and hardened to Rockwell 55. This hardness allows for the formation of a burr and ensures that it remains effective for a long time.
The Lie-Nielsen #212, popular among kite builders for tapering bamboo, is a versatile tool suitable for many applications. It enables you to create smooth and flat surfaces with ease.
The scraper plane leaves a very fine finish. The slightly thicker blade is made from high-quality A2 steel and hardened to Rockwell 60–62. The body is made of bronze and features a cherry wood knob.

Scraper planes are ideal for working with wood species that are difficult to plane with a traditional hand plane. A scraper plane is much more comfortable to use than a hand scraper, and its body greatly helps in keeping the workpiece flat. That said, scraper planes can be tricky to use, especially for those trying them for the first time. Therefore, it's recommended — particularly for beginners — not to raise a burr on the scraper blade! These tools already work very well with a scraper blade sharpened like a plane iron. Although a planed surface is always preferable to a scraped one, there are moments when a scraper plane is simply the best tool for the job!
