For a long time, the quality of saws in the West was not a focus. Many people never had the chance to experience the qualities of a good saw. It's a shame because the difference with a lower-quality saw is remarkable.
This beautiful 'tapered' rip backsaw from Lie-Nielsen features a sturdy handle made of cherry wood and is equipped with a brass back for optimal stability. Due to this back, the saw depth is limited: from 95 mm at the tip to 105 mm at the handle side, which is almost always sufficient for cutting precise joints.
The rip backsaw is especially suitable for cutting wood joints and for sawing cuts parallel to the wood grain. And, of course, suitable for cutting 'tenons', the peg in a mortise and tenon joint. The coarseness of this saw is indicated as 11 ppi, meaning it has 11 points per inch (25.4 mm), equivalent to 10 tpi (teeth per inch).
