Lie-Nielsen Shoulder plane #042

This shoulder plane (also known as a rabbet plane), a redesign of the Record Shoulder Plane 042, which in turn was a further development of a Preston model, is almost entirely made of Ductile iron. Only the blade-clamping mechanism is made of bronze.

Fastening and adjusting screws are extra-large, making them easy to use. The screw for adjusting the blade opening is deeply recessed in the plane body and is fixed and tapped into the sole, allowing the blade opening to be adjusted when turning left or right. The side is often used as a sole, for example, to match the raised edges of a tenon in a mortise and tenon joint. This means that a shoulder plane must regularly flatten end grain, which requires a low mounting angle of the plane blade.

This shoulder plane has a width of 19 mm, making it suitable for creating tenons for heavy mortise and tenon joints.
