Product information

The low-angle jack plane, based on the Stanley 62, features an adjustable blade opening in the sole and a heavy, almost 5 mm thick plane blade. Originally designed for working on end grain, this splendid plane becomes a true all-rounder with additional blades, suitable for a variety of tasks.

This low-angle plane has a body made of Ductile iron, aged after casting to relieve all stresses in the material. The plane boasts an absolutely flat sole, a bronze cap iron, a cherry wood knob, and a comfortable handle.

The #62 is a versatile plane. The bed of the #62 is angled at 12 degrees, and the included blade is sharpened at a 25-degree angle. The total cutting angle is thus 37 degrees, ideal for use on end grain or softwood.

If you plan to plane hardwood, we recommend ordering a second blade. Planing hardwood typically requires a higher cutting angle. Sharpen this second blade at a 45° angle. Since the #62 is a 'bevel-up' plane, the total cutting angle will be 57°. With a second blade, you can easily switch between cutting angles.

The #62 can also be used for rough work by employing a toothed blade. A toothed blade quickly removes large imperfections and resin from the surface. After using the #62 with a toothed blade, finish the wood with a finely set smoothing plane like the #4.

For use with a shooting board, you can use a 'hot dog.' A hot dog is a detachable handle that attaches to the bulge on the side of the plane. This handle makes extended edge planing much more comfortable.

In Fine Woodworking's Tool Guide 2019, this plane received the judgment of 'Editor's Best Overall Choice' and 'Readers Choice' in its category.
